Apart from the softening influence of surrender, an ego-centred life will inevitably become increasingly rigid and brittle. It will also inevitably lead to a crisis. This crisis, and the realignment of life that the crisis invites, is ultimately a deeply spiritual matter. It involves dethroning the ego and replacing it in the executive role with something more transcendent and genuinely ultimate. It requires that we find our place in the larger wholes within which we exist. It involves discovering that our life is not our own, but something that flows from a source infinitely greater than us. Suddenly, even if only momentarily, we recognize what it is to be aligned with the Transcendent One in which we, and all that exists, has our being. And we are ruined for ever settling in any smaller place or substitute home.
